The First Failing

Roy Masters

How on earth could there be a positive change as long as your ego enjoys being stroked—if you cannot (or will not) realize the ego cause of your problems?

Can you continue blundering along, struggling egotistically with effects of failing as though they were in themselves causes, wearing yourself out making things horribly complicated?

The main truth to realize is that there is not a thing in this world, not a soul living that can give you the answers you are seeking.

The motivation to act in a right way, as well as an understanding of Truth, must come from the universal consciousness we all share, which is inside you, testifying to what is being said here.

You must want to see the nature of your failing; only then will you understand what your real problem is, and only then is change possible.

Otherwise your teacher, psychiatrist, or minister becomes your god, your source of direction and understanding, rendering you helplessly dependent on mere mortals, duplicating the unholy relationship that has caused you problems.

The main reason most people repress their feelings and thoughts is that they do not know how to deal with them and when they do open up it is only for sympathy.

Indeed, improperly dealing with what you discover can be a second-stage cause of greater suffering.

I shall therefore discuss the basic principles from which you have strayed, in the negative, to help you grasp the protocol of coping with, rather than running from, your sins, anxieties, guilts and fears.

"Understanding is an intelligent,

revitalizing, healing force."

Here, in a nutshell, is the healing order of the wordless way.

The first failing (and the underlying cause of any problem) is pride...willfulness.

A second failing arises when you deal pridefully with the problems generated by your first failing.

All sickness, tragedy and suffering originate in faults born of pride and pride, being what it is, resents seeing those faults come to light.

Your shame makes you resent being made aware, even though awareness (and repentance) is the only cure.

The light shining through awareness causes pain as your pride is laid bare, but it is your conscience that you identify as your enemy and fear to endure.

If you are willing to realize how much resentment you have built up against being made aware, your spirit will soften and can stop resisting God’s will.

Then something marvelous will occur—not by an act of will or struggle, but as a result of making the truth welcome in your heart. Understanding is a complete package of knowing, with its own motivation to bring about a hidden plan to benefit you.

Understanding is an intelligent, revitalizing, healing force.
