Learn Meditation
Learning how to meditate can be one of the most important things you can do for your physical and mental well being. Using the correct meditation techniques can relieve stress, which is known to impact on coronary disease, immune deficiency disorders, digestive problems, allergies, diabetes and even cancer. It also relieves mental and emotional disorders such as depression, anxiety, rage and addictive behaviors.
It is important, however, to choose a meditation technique that does not rely on hypnosis. Most traditional methods, especially those derived from the Dharmic religions of Asia, use mantras, breathing techniques or a visual focus to essentially aid the practitioner to hypnotize himself. While in this hypnotic state, the practitioner refuses to allow any negative thoughts or emotions to enter consciousness.
The absence of such thoughts and emotions provides relief from stress, but only as long as they can remain buried or barred. A more lasting solution is offered by Roy Masters, who developed the "Be Still and Know" method of meditation. Rather than deny or repress negative thoughts, Masters believes you should allow them in, closely observe them, and train yourself to acknowledge them without reacting to them.
It's important to remember that stress is not something we "get" from outside events or stimuli. Stress is entirely an internal occurrence, resulting from our reaction to those stimuli. By removing emotional reactions, we can fully allow and recognize the traumas of everyday life without suffering because of them. Unlike self-hypnosis, this learned objectivity is a tool you will be able to use at all times.
