Health Benefits Of Meditation
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland of the brain. It functions to support the immune system, slow cell damage, increase energy and aid sleep. Melatonin relieves many symptoms of stress, and may even inhibit growth of cancer cells. Research has shown that levels of melatonin are increased in individuals who meditate regularly.
There are, of course, many different types of meditation. Some require the practitioner to focus on the breath as it enters and leaves the body. Some use a mantra, or repeated phrase, to drive out other thoughts. Most forms of meditation are a type of self-hypnosis, driving negative emotions out of the mind or burying them beneath a mantra.
"Be Still and Know" is a meditation technique developed by Roy Masters, head of the Foundation of Human Understanding. Rather than denying, repressing or covering over negative emotions, the practitioner simply notes them, without judgment, resentment or anger. This learned objectivity reduces stress, increases melatonin, and redirects blood flow throughout the body.
The health benefits to be gained when symptoms of stress are relieved are many and varied. Blood pressure drops to healthy levels and blood flows to all the major organs. Healing abilities are increased, and cell damage decreased. Cardiac problems, asthma, diabetes, migraines and many other maladies linked to stress can be alleviated.
