Depression Self-Help
There is a wide range of medications available today that treat the symptoms of depression, and these can be very useful in short-term management of the disorder. They cannot cure the root cause of depression, however. That can only be accomplished by dealing properly with unseen anger and the effects of past traumas and abuses, because depression is, at its root, anger turned inward.
Those who suffer depression tend to be gentle souls who don't want to hurt anyone. But as the wounded fish draws the shark, such people often fall prey to abusers. They don't know how to deal with such injustice. Appeasement only serves to bring on more abuse, and the abuser seems too powerful for the victim to express anger toward.
That anger then gets turned inward, as the victim blames herself for not being able to escape or prevent the abuse. The more the victim feels responsible, the more permission the abuser has to continue the abuse. The only way to break this cycle is by letting go of the anger.
"Be Still and Know," a meditation exercise developed by Roy Masters, offers a way for the depressed person to deal with internalized anger. Repression only increases depression. Anger must be explored and understood. Past injustices must be resolved through forgiveness and objectivity, and most importantly, the victim must have compassion for herself.
