Christian Meditation Techniques
For many people, the word meditation is inextricably linked with Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. Roy Masters has promulgated a meditation technique based on Christian values and principles, which he calls "Be Still and Know." This form of meditation is significantly different from meditation used in the Dharmic religions.
Practitioners of "Be Still and Know" do not strive to empty their minds of all thoughts and emotions. Eastern meditation forms do this by continual repetition of a mantra, but Masters wants you to examine your thoughts in the light of Christian grace and forgiveness. "Patience" is a key word in his thought, and it can't be achieved by blocking out emotions.
What he wants you to achieve through his guided meditation exercise is examine your thoughts and learn to observe and become master over your emotional responses. If someone has hurt you, you may respond with anger, depression, or at the very least, a judgment about that person. Let it all go, Masters says. Your resentment is hurting you and keeping you from the Christian ideal.
Letting go of negative emotions is completely different from blocking them out or denying them. When you can observe your thoughts dispassionately, you can forgive not only those who hurt you, but yourself, for all your errors. Forgiveness is at the very heart of Christianity. God sent his Son for no other reason than to offer us a way to cleanse ourselves from sin. Daily practice of "Be Still and Know" allows you to experience that forgiveness in every moment.
