Chakra Meditation
In Hinduism and some other Asian religions, meditation is focused on the chakras of the body. A chakra can be thought of as a center of energy. Traditionally there are seven, rising from the base of the spine to the top of the head. All energy, whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual, is located in and transferred between the chakras.
The function of the chakras is to keep these differing types of energy in balance. Certain forms of yoga meditation are intended to help the practitioner maintain that balance. Each chakra is associated with a certain type of consciousness. Starting at the base of the spine and ascending, these are body, instinct, life energy, emotions, communication, an overview of life and communication with God. At the top is pure spirit, at the bottom pure physicality.
Yoga incorporates principles that are basic to good health, such as exercise and proper diet. Furthermore, there are physical benefits that accrue from most types of meditation. But Roy Masters, head of the Foundation of Human Understanding, believes that chakra meditation can become a form of self-hypnosis, making you feel better only as long as the meditation lasts. When meditation stops, the negative energy that has been blocked comes rushing back, often stronger than before.
Masters has developed a meditation exercise that encourages you to focus on that negative energy and overcome it, rather than trying to deny or repress it. His "Be Still and Know" method allows you to separate your emotions from external stimuli. Read through the FHU website to download this guided meditation or order an audiotape or CD.
