                                                                           Barriers to Understanding

ROY : (trying to bring the man back to the subject of words) Here you go again, playing with words to avoid the illumination I am bringing you. You see, I know what I am saying when I speak to you.

MAN: (sarcastically) You're not perfect; you just don't sin?

ROY: That's right.

MAN: That is synonymous to perfection, Roy.

ROY: No. Now listen carefully, and I will show you what I mean by that, if you can bear to hear it. There is a process of becoming a greater sinner, and there is a process of be­coming less of a sinner. In other words, every time I approach a point of temptation, a point where I could sin, but I resist with faith and with an understanding heart, which the good Lord gave me to save me from sin, then I cancel with grace what I had formerly done without it. So I die daily and become remolded as a new creature in Christ. I am not yet perfect, because I am, to some extent, still the creature product of my former sinful life. I am the product of my sick environment, as were the people before me, and of my own ignorance.

MAN: I agree there.

ROY: The difference with me is that I am changing. By reaching the same point of temptation and resisting it, my old
