Anger Management Techniques

How do you attempt to manage your anger? Do you take a count of 10 to try to choke it down? Do you deny that it exists? Do you turn it inward in the form of depression? Do you chant or focus on your breathing to banish it from your consciousness? None of these are effective ways of dealing with anger, as you know from having tried them.

Now try something different. Instead of stifling your anger or redirecting it somewhere else, how about understanding it? Roy Masters, head of the Foundation of Human Understanding and author of 16 books, has developed a meditation technique called "Be Still and Know." To call it meditation is somewhat misleading, since it is fundamentally different from other types of meditation. Roy likes to call it an observation exercise.

What this guided exercise will do is allow you to examine your anger and discover where it comes from. Chances are good that it is a conditioned response that was instilled in you long ago. Once you see that is it not a necessary reaction to stimuli, you can detach your emotions from events. Soon you can face the most frustrating situations with calm and equanimity. Your anger hasn't been repressed; it simply isn't there any more.

Imagine how peaceful and serene your life could be. With daily practice, the "Be Still and Know" exercise can bring you the grace to calmly confront injustice, cruelty, stupidity and all those other stimuli that used to enrage you. Visit the FHU website today to download your guided meditation.
