Anger Management For Kids
How your children deal with anger depends on you. Modeling correct attitudes and behavior is the most powerful form of instruction. There is no method of discipline, no reward for good behavior, no child-rearing strategy that is more important than your own correct behavior.
When your child throws a tantrum, do you get upset? If you do, ask yourself why. Is it pride? Are you embarrassed about what other people may think? Does your ego resent that your child isn't perfect? Or maybe your child's rage triggers some fear from your own childhood.
The correct response to your child's tantrum is calmness and patience. But these are not available to you if your pride, your ego, or a conditioned response from the past is making you upset. If you want to help your child deal with things without getting angry, you first need to work on the roots of your own negative emotions.
"Be Still and Know," the guided meditation developed by Roy Masters, can help you do that. This exercise helps you focus on your emotions and delve into their causes. Once the cause is dealt with, the negative energy simply dissipates. Anger is not suppressed or diverted. It just goes away, and is replaced by objectivity and equanimity. If you want that for yourself and your children, visit the FHU website to download the guided meditation or purchase an audiotape, CD or MP3. Give your children the gift of a rational parent and a future free from anger.
